Brain and Learning SIG

Cognitive Neuroscience Summer School 2015
4-20.8.2015, Helsinki

Organisers:
University of Helsinki, Institute of Behavioural Sciences, Cognitive Brain Research Unit; Finnish Institute for Occupational Health, Helsinki, CICERO Learning

Credits: 6 ECTS

The course will enable students to understand the theoretical principles, promises, and limitations of the modern brain research methods. They have some hands-on experience in data acquisition and analyses. They also learn the most recent advances in using these methods in order to better understand human cognition and learning.

Aim and Format
The human brain and its ability to adapt to the demands of the environment is the core of our course. The course program will cover the brain functions in the framework of neuroplasticity, with a focus to linguistic processing during the course of normal and abnormal development as well as in neurological rehabilitation. The course has tutorials on brain research methods. Additionally, there are several demonstrations on practical laboratory work with modern brain imaging techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The students also have an opportunity to introduce their projects and research outcomes in poster session and to discuss their viewpoints in group works based on the pre-course readings. Thus, this course is particularly useful for students who wish to gain knowledge about the most recent developments in auditory cognitive neuroscience, particularly when it comes to linguistic functions.
