CICERO Lecture: The pedagogic possibilities of interactive whiteboards by
Professor David Wray, University of Warwick, UK
DATE: 13 May 2008
VENUE: University of Helsinki, Minerva building,
Room K113
This session will explore some of the possible ways of using interactive
whiteboards in teaching and learning. These range from using the whiteboard
as a display device, to using it in much more interactive ways to involve
learners in the joint construction of knowledge.
Classrooms in the United
Kingdom are now almost universally equipped with interactive whiteboards,
although research suggests that these boards tend to be used largely as
display devices. There are some interesting interactive uses, though, which
have more potential for changing traditional pedagogy. In many ways the
interactive whiteboard is a technology waiting for a pedagogy and in the
session Prof Wray will explore some ideas about what such a pedagogy might look
like.
David Wray taught in primary schools in the UK for 10 years and is currently
Professor of Literacy Education at the University of Warwick. He has
published over 40 books on aspects of literacy teaching and is best known or
his work on developing teaching strategies to help learners access the
curriculum through literacy. This has resulted in such innovations as the
Extending Interactions with Texts (EXIT) model to guide the teaching of
reading to learn, and writing frames to help with the writing of factual
text types.
The lecture is likely to interest teacher trainees, teacher educators and
researchers. Also all those interested in creating learning and teaching
materials for interactive whiteboards will find the lecture insightful.
Everybody welcome. No prior registration needed.
