Joy of Learning - a CICERO Learning conference

INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT:
CICERO Learning Network at University of Helsinki is organising a high level international conference titled Joy of Learning on Monday 15 December 2008. Well-known international experts, as well as leading Finnish educational and social policy makers, will be participating in this event.
LEARNING AS EMPOWERMENT SYMPOSIUM (9.00-12.30 Juhlasali, Unioninkatu 34, University of Helsinki):
The theme of the morning symposium is Learning as empowerment – a challenge for the Finnish society. The symposium will include keynote speeches by:
- Finnish Minister of Migration and European Affairs Astrid Thors
- Professor Anna Sfard (Michigan State University)
- Mr Koji Miyamoto (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation at OECD)
- Director Leena Vestala (Finnish Ministry of Education)
- Mr Pasi Sahlberg (European Training Foundation)
- Vice Rector Professor Hannele Niemi (University of Helsinki)
Closing remarks by
Professor Andrew Pollard (Institute of Education, University of London).
Topics of the morning session include:
- Learning, education and well-being
- Social outcomes of learning, improving the quality of life
- Education and global sustainability - How we understand competitiveness?
- Teacher education as basis for an educated and competent society
- The joy of learning from research
- Education and multiculturalism
COPING AT WORK AND AT SCHOOL SYMPOSIUM (12.30-18.00, Pieni Juhlasali, Fabianinkatu 33, University of Helsinki):
This national symposium of the afternoon will concentrate on the topic of coping at work and at school. There will be keynote speakers from the higher education sector as well as presentations by experts in the field of education and science in Finland. The symposium will be conducted in Finnish and will include the following topics:
- Brain overload and its impact on learning
- The school climate and exhaustion of pupils
- School as a good work place for both teachers and learners – The professional ethics of teachers
- The work load and recovering strategies of teachers
- Learning café discussion workshop
BRAIN, LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM (BY INVITATION ONLY):
The international workshop of the afternoon will take place at the same time as the national one. The broad theme of the workshop will be Brain, learning and technology / Aivot, Oppiminen ja teknologia and the session will include presentations on currect CICERO Learning projects among other things.
The international workshop is by invitation only and will feature Finnish and international experts on learning.
JOY OF LEARNING GALA EVENING AT FINLANDIA HALL
Joy of learning gala evening will start at Finlandia Hall at 7pm. There will be short speeches on joy of learning from different perspectives. Dinner tickets for the evening cost 50€ per person.
REGISTRATION for all Joy of Learning conference events starts on 26 September 2008.
LEARNING AS EMPOWERMENT symposium is free of charge, but registration is required.
COPING AT WORK AND AT SCHOOL symposium (conducted in Finnish) is 60€ per person (the price includes lunch).
NB! We have reserved a limited number of free tickets for students for the afternoon symposium. Please indicate on the registration form if you are a full-time student.
A dinner ticket for the JOY OF LEARNING GALA EVENING at the Finlandia hall is 50€ per person.
