CICERO Learning network promotes cutting edge research on learning across the boundaries
between diverse scientific fields. One of the central themes is
Learning and the Impact of Technology
In today's world, technology permeates different aspects of life, especially education and work. Technology
increasingly influences the ways in which we can learn. It has great potential to support individualised and
independent learning, while also creating flexible spaces for communication and collaboration.
In addition to basic technology skills, an e-confident learner should be able to harness technology in ways that
powerfully support their learning of inquiry-based dispositions, logical reasoning, analytical thinking and creativity
In order to support individual learning, research is needed on user-friendly technology applications and the
development of products and services for the needs of different learners, groups and organizations (such as schools,
public sector and industry). These include knowledge management applications, game and entertainment applications and
communal web services as well as mobile applications and services.
Digital technologies can transform not only how people learn, but also what they learn, and who they learn with. Social networks and knowledge building as social learning have become important tools for building new knowledge. Therefore we also need to critically review what, when and how we learn with and from technology.
Research focuses under this theme include:
• digital technology
• mobile technology
• web-based communication and learning
• technology-supported collaborative learning
• human-computer interaction
• learning machines
