CICERO Learning gets involved in Nordic PhD supervisors' training

Professor Kristiina Kumpulainen, the director of CICERO Learning, will be lecturing to Nordic PhD supervisors in Reykjavik this November

The training course, funded by the NordForsk fund, will be organised by the School of Education at the University of Iceland on November 26-28 2008. The main aim of the course is to enable capacity building for PhD supervisors in educational and learning research. Although the three day course is targeted primarily at new PhD supervisors of educational sciences, academics of related social sciences and more seasoned supervisors are welcome to attend as well. The training will benefit those researchers who already have a doctorate and wish to develop their career by supervising PhD students.

The Nordic context of the course stems from the shared values and ethos of the region. The objective is to mediate capacity and raise research standards across the board as none of the universities of the region are immune to the growing international competition for students and staff. The ongoing trend of increasing the number of PhD students at universities also requires continuing training for new and experienced academics in order to guarantee the high quality supervision.

One of the core tasks of CICERO Learning is the promotion of educators’ professional development and Professor Kumpulainen is delighted to be one of the lecturers on the training course. Professor Kumpulainen notes that co-operation with fellow academics and institutions in the Nordic area will become even more important in the future and will hopefully offer more avenues for networking and high level multidisciplinary research.
