VIDEO IN RESEARCH ON LEARNING AND EDUCATION
CICERO LEARNING SUMMER SCHOOL COURSE 9-25 AUGUST 2011
CICERO Learning Network will be organising a three-week summer school course for the third consecutive time this coming August following the excellent student feedback from the previous courses. The course will be held in Helsinki on 9-25 August 2011.
The Video Research course is designed for students and researchers interested in using video-based methods and technologies in research on learning and education. The course focuses on current trends and phenomena in video research. The curriculum consists of the practicalities of conducting video research in diverse settings, the theoretical background and ethical issues of video research as well as video analysis tools and methods. This is an excellent opportunity for students and researchers to network while developing their understanding about the possibilities and challenges of video research. Participants are also encouraged to share their experiences of video research tools and tell about their own video research projects.
Themes of the course:
1. Theoretical perspectives on video research on learning
2. Video research on classrooms
3. Video research on teacher learning
4. Video research on peer, family, and informal learning
5. Video collaboratories and technological features
6. Various video research tools
Who is this course for?
The course is designed for Master’s level and postgraduate (PhD) students who use or plan to use video-based methods and technologies for inquiries in educational research or related fields. The course leaders will also consider applicants who are in the final stages of their undergraduate studies and are familiar with video research. The course is multidisciplinary by nature, but as the emphasis is on behavioural sciences research, applicants should have at least some previous studies in this field. Please note:
- In general the course relies heavily upon active student participation and in-class interaction.
- Assessment of the course is on PASS / FAIL basis.
- For a student to pass the course and gain study credits (5 ECTS) they must attend all lectures and workshops, hand in all required course work assigned by the lecturers and participate actively in classes.
- There is no written exam at the end of the course.
- Each day of the course is composed of a lecture in the morning and workshop/group exercise/individual work in the afternoon.
