ICT at School's Everyday Life and OPTEK projects' blog: http://blogs.helsinki.fi/oppiailoakouluun/in-english/

Towards the future Finnish school 2008—2010
ICTs at School’s Everyday Life project is included in the Finnish government platform for 2007-2011 and National Information Society Policy of Finland 2007-2011. The project is carried out by Ministry of Transport and Communications (co-ordination), Ministry of Education and National Board of Education and in co-operation with industry and commerce.  The operational work in carried out by CICERO Learning of University of Helsinki with Sanna Vahtivuori-Hänninen as Project Manager and Co-ordinator Raija Latva-Karjanmaa of CICERO Learning Network as Communications Manager. Anna Aarnio is the Project Secretary of the project.

The vision of the project is that by 2011 Finnish schools will have innovative and creative ICT models and practices for wide dissemination to all Finnish schools. The aim is for Finland to be one of the European leaders in the utilization of information and communication technologies and modern media in teaching and learning.

The goal is to produce new knowledge and know-how for schools and educational administration about the latest developments in ICT, but more importantly also to develop the educational use of ICT in a multi-dimensional way. The project studies and develops pedagogical adaptations of ICT from three aspects of the future school presented in the CICERO Learning report (CICERO papers 3): teachers pedagogical knowledge and team work, the structural and pedagogical development of teaching and technological innovations and infrastructure. These aspects are studied and elaborated in order to obtain models and practices of pedagogical use of ICT in the future school of Finland.

The end result of the overall project will be a strategy/road map for the government’s next term of office which will include models, recommendations and practices related to:

1) Pedagogical practices of ICT for teaching and learning

2) Media culture in formal and informal learning environments

3) ICT mediated interaction, team work and competencies

4) ICT tools, infrastructure and usability.

Schools in the project
Altogether 12 schools from around Finland have been selected for the project. Teachers have designed the pilot projects in each school. ICTs at School’s Everyday Life project is also going to link broader research and development activities to the work done in schools. Both existing good practices and new innovations related to ICTs in teaching and learning are going to be tested and evaluated in practical school settings. Universities and researchers are invited to create research partnerships with schools.
