MobIT - Developing Mobile Network-Based Teaching, Studying and Learning Processes

MobIT-project (2007-2009) is funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education. The research is carried out at the University of Lapland Centre for Media Pedagogy.

The aim of the transdisciplinary research project is to study what happens when mobile technology, in this case, laptop computers and a wireless local area network, is put into operation. The disciplines involved include education, media education and applied information technology.

Research started in the autumn 2004 as first year students at the University of Lapland (Finland) were given the opportunity to acquire laptop computers through the University. A wireless local area network (WLAN) covering the whole campus area was also set up. First year students in 2005 and 2006 have also had the opportunity to acquire laptop computers.

From the points of view of educational sciences and media education, the focus is on finding what the possible added pedagogical values are for different actors, such as teaching personnel, students, researchers, and planning officers. From the point of view of applied information technology the focus is on the utilization of technology, strategies students use when they join student communities, and also data security issues associated with studying and learning that is supported by mobile technology.

The MobIT project has three case studies:

Studiability, Learnability and the Management of Everyday Life
The Utilization of Laptop Computers and Wireless Local Area Network
Teachers’ Utilization of Mobile Technology

Research team:

Professor Heli Ruokamo (Project Leader)
Hanna Räisänen (Project Manager)
